Bhattarai meets India PM, Lanka prez

KATHMANDU, June 22:Caretaker Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai held separate meetings with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa on the sidelines of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro.



In his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Singh, Dr Bhattarai apprised him of the political situation in Nepal after the demise of the Constituent Assembly. [break]He said the government is putting in full efforts to forge consensus among the political parties to complete the constitution drafting process.



According to a press statement issued by Nepali embassy in Brazil, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh assured that India is ready to extend all possible support for peace, stability and development in Nepal.



While appreciating the progress achieved in the peace process, he also expressed hope that peace and democracy would flourish in Nepal through the wisdom of the political leaders and evolving consensus among political parties.



On the occasion, Indian prime minister said that India would be ready to make an arrangement for additional power supply to in view of the existing power shortage in Nepal. He also asked Prime Minister Bhattarai for strong vigilance and cooperation to tackle the problem of fake Indian currency circulation across porous Indo-Nepal border.



Likewise at the meeting with Sri Lankan President Rajapaksa, the prime minister emphasized the need for further strengthening bilateral relations in all possible areas by enhancing mutual interaction and cooperation.



According to the press statement, Sri Lanka has expressed interest to invest in Nepal´s hydropower sector. Both the sides underscored the need for more cooperation for promotion and development of tourism, resuming direct air connectivity and Lumbini development.
