KATHMANDU, May 13: The agitating Brahmin Chhetri Struggle Committee has issued a three-day ultimatum to the government to address their demands.

The agitating group has also warned of continuing their protests if their demands are not met within the next three days.[break]

Organizing a press conference in the capital, Chairman of Chhetri Samaj Nepal Dil Bahadur Chhetri objected to Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal´s remarks that they would counter those taking to the streets against ethnic-based provinces. “Such a remark from a top party leader is objectionable,” he said.

Spokesperson for the struggle committee Kumar Bahadur Khadka said they would only hold talks with the top leaders of major parties. Earlier, they had held talks with the government team headed by Deputy Prime Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula.

Meanwhile, the government is holding talks with the agitating Undivided Far-west Struggle Committee (UFWSC) on Monday. Top leaders of the three major parties on Sunday discussed ways to address the their demands.

“We have been told that they will inform us about the time and venue for talks scheduled for tomorrow [Monday] morning,” said Bahadur Singh Thapa, a member of the talks team.

Sunday marked the 17th day of the general strike enforced by UFWSC in the far-western region. The prolonged strike has thrown normal life in the region out of gear, while also causing acute shortage of daily necessities.
