KATHMANDU, May 7: Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai has assured full security to lawmaker Chitra Bahadur KC who has reportedly recieved several death threats over his staunch opposition to the country being divided into federal states, something the major political parties have vowed to do.

Speaking at a meeting of parliament´s State Affairs Committee (SAC), Bhattarai said his government´s attention had been drawn towards the serious threats by "some criminal elements" against KC, who is Chairman of People´s Front Nepal, for his different views on federalism. [break]

"I have already directed concerned government authorities to make appropriate security arrangement for his safety," Bhattarai said. "The government is committed to make adequate security arrangement for him."

At the start of the meeting, UML lawmaker Pradip Gyawali had drawn the prime minister´s attention to the repeated threats against KC´s life for the past five months from unknown individual or group.

KC meanwhile, said he last received death threats from two numbers from Japan, 81358774759 and 81358774763, on May 2 saying he had only 15 days to live. “If the threats are real, I now have only 10 days to live,” he said.

KC also accused several parties of threatening him, including Rastriya Janamukti Party led by Malbar Singh Thapa because of his views. “Forget other parties, I have been receiving threats even from the ruling parties,” he further said.

Talking to Republica, KC said he wanted police security. “My own party can provide a few cadres for my security, but what I want from the government is to trace the number and punish those behind this,” he said. “The government´s failure to book those guilty has made me wonder if people issuing threats are receiving government protection.”

The SAC Chairman Ram Nath Dhakal directed the government to provide effective security to KC and bring those involved to justice.
