KATHMANDU, Aug 21: Minister for Education, Science, and Technology, Bidya Bhattarai, has demanded security arrangements, stating that Tribhuvan University (TU) is unsafe. She took to Facebook on Wednesday to request the home minister to make necessary security arrangements at the university.

“TU has become entirely unsafe due to attempts to attack officials and threatening calls being made to professors over the past few days. I strongly urge the home minister to arrange for organized security at TU,” she wrote on Facebook.

She emphasized that no one is free to commit hooliganism and also requested the home ministry to bring those involved in such activities to justice.

Following a dispute over the appointment of the head of the Central Department of Sociology, which led to an unsafe situation at TU, Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Kesharjung Baral, Rector Khadak KC, and Registrar Kedar Rijal had earlier decided to take leave.

After the government deployed security personnel on TU premises, the office-bearers of TU have returned to their duties.

The dispute arose when the Dean of Humanities and Sociology Faculty Kusum Shakya recommended the name of Tikaram Gautam as the head of the department. Soon, various student organizations started protesting against the decision. The protests still continue. According to the university officials, they face a security threat from the protesting students.

Some 20 days ago, the Kirtipur Police Circle had also asked the office-bearers of the university to be careful when visiting the university. After that, the officials of the university were on leave saying that they were unsafe.
