“Under The Bodhi Tree” exhibition was envisioned to create an artistic portrayal of Buddhist philosophy through the imagination of 12 young artists. [break]
As part of “The Green Lumbini Initiative”, WWF sent the artists to Lumbini to create two painting each depicting the interconnection between nature and humans during their trip.
The proceeds from the sale of the paintings are to be utilized by Lumbini Development Trust (LDT) in order to plant trees for the Million Trees Project under the Green Lumbini Initiative.
WWF partnered with LDT in 2010 with the aim of developing and conserving the Lumbini region and is working with the trust on this event.
Chief Guest for the event David C. Atteberry, Mission Director, USAID/Nepal, said, “Earth Day started as a day of national environmental recognition in the USA but now has evolved into a world-wide campaign to protect the environment.
This year is the first Earth Day since the Hariyo Ban Program was established in Nepal - the US government is pleased to be helping Nepal in maintaining its unique biodiversity and tackling the challenges of climate change for people and nature.”
The twelve artists who’s paitings are on sale at the gallery are Bidhata K.C, Gyanu Gurung, Saurganga Darshandhari, Sunita Rana, Sushma Shakya, Sagar Manandhar, Hit man Gurung, Mekh Limbu, Prithivi Shrestha, Mukesh Shrestha, Samudra Man Shrestha and Binod Pradhan.
Also in the event, WWF announced the winners of “Earth and You”, a photo contest organized to celebrate the Earth Day in partnership with USAID, Care, FECOFUN and National Trust for Nature and Conservation.
The competition was organized under the Hariyo Ban Nepal ko Dhan Program, a five-year program funded by the USAID.
Dipesh Shrestha won first prize under the theme Hariyo Ban Nepal ko Dhan while Uttam Bahadur Shrestha also won first prize under the theme Climate Reality.
The exhibition is scheduled to go on for two more weeks.
