Sanitary pad in uterus since one and half year

ILAM, Feb 7: Doctors have removed a sanitary pad from uterus of a woman, 17months after it was accidentally left there during a child birth. Apparently, medical staff had "forgotten" to remove it in September 2010 at the district hospital while they helped deliver a baby.

Sita Bhattarai, 28, said she suffered severe pain after she returned from hospital and became seriously ill. Visits to several doctors also proved fruitless as they were unable to diagnose the cause of her illness.[break]

However, she returned to Ilam district hospital Saturday, suspecting uterine prolapses. But to surprise of doctors, they discovered something - a tip of the cotton pad.

The victim has demand compensation from hospital for further checks up with gynecologist to ensure the pad had not caused longtime effects. “We have to ensure, whether she can conceive again or not. Other infection can happen inside,” said Sita´s husband Dhanendra.

Hospital´s Superintendent Dr Taranath Pokhrel said that the hospital will conduct general check up of the patient in the hospital. But said it would not be able to cover the cost of treatment outside the hospital.

After hospital rejected family´ request for funding for treatment outside, they said they planned to lodge a complain with the district administration.

"We spent a lot of money for treatment due to the hospital´s negligence and it caused mental and physical distress," Dhanendra said. "We are not asking for money we spent in the past, but for checks with specalists which have now become necessary due to the new discovery."
