MAHENDRANAGAR, April 21: Surveyors from Nepal and India have started repairing border pillars in the district.

Sudarshan Singh Dhami, leader of Nepali surveyors, informed that a joint team of surveyors has started repairing border pillars in Punarbas Muncipality of Kanchanpur. As per an agreement between the two countries, Nepal is mandated to repair pillars with odd numbers whereas India repair pillars with even numbers. "The repair work of Nepal-India border pillars in Kanchanpur district will be completed within a month," said Dhami. 

The joint team is mandated to repair the pillars, construct new pillars if they have been damaged and resolve dispute over no man's land. Locals in Belauri have opposed the joint team's work saying that Nepali land was encroached in the course of constructing the border pillars in the Belauri Municipality.

 Tikaram Pant, a local in the Bhuda village of Belauri, said 24 households living in the Nepali territory have now been "rendered Indians due to faulty border survey" of the joint survey team. "We have been tilling the land for the past 39 years but now this survey has put our land on the Indian side," said Pant. 

The survey team, however, dismissed the claims of locals. 

According to details provided by the Armed Police Force, only 78 of the total 390 pillars in Kanchanpur district are intact whereas the remaining pillars were either destroyed or swept away by the Mahakali River floods.
