NEPALGUNJ, March 1: Four cadres of Maoist-affiliated Young Communist League (YCL) who allegedly attacked a street corner meeting of political parties in Musikot in Rukum Sunday were arrested Monday.
Rukum Chief District Officer Desh Raj Dhakal said the arrested are YCL´s district level members – Suresh KC, Bikram Shahi, Arjun Batala and Dinesh Gurung.
Nepali Congress, Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist), Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Rastriya Janmorcha and Nepal Workers and Peasants´ Party held the street corner meeting accusing the Maoist party of consulting only their cadres on contents of the new constitution. Soon after the meeting began, YCL attacked it.
At least 25 members of different parties were injured in the attack. Nanda Bist of Nepali Congress and Janmorcha´s Central Committee member Ram Prasad Puri were seriously injured in the attack.
Police and YCL clashed after the former tried to prevent the Maoist youth wing from attacking other party members. The district administration imposed night-long curfew Sunday through Monday after the situation became tense.
Police arrested the YCL cadres after a meeting between Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) and the other parties failed to reach agreement on punishment to attackers and compensation to those injured in the attack.
33/11 kV Musikot substation comes into operation
Another meeting between the parties is scheduled Tuesday.
A team of Constituent Assembly members from these parties are in the district to collect opinion for the new constitution. Similar teams have gone to other parts of the country.
