KATHMANDU, Jan 19: Health professionals have indefinitely shut down all public and private health institutions, laboratories and pharmacies in Kailali district from Thursday demanding security from the government.

Dr Suvesh Raj Kayastha, Kailali chapter president of Nepal Medical Association (NMA), said that they had to call for the strike after some people repeatedly threatened to stone doctors, smear black soot on their faces and padlock hospitals over the death of a pregnant woman two weeks ago.

On December 31, Chhaya Devi Singh, a pregnant woman from Dhangadhi municipality-4, had died during delivery in Seti zonal hospital. Locals have claimed that she died due to negligence of health workers, including Mahato. He was roughed up by the mothers´ group over the issue.

Emergency services at the hospital also have been hit hard due to the strike as most of doctors are off hospitals.

Hundreds of patients have been left in the lurch as Seti zonal hospital closed down services. Most of patients headed for Nepalgunj after the zonal hospital refused to treat them.

On Thursday alone, 20 pregnant women returned without any treatment from the hospital, according to Bhagwati Badal, maternity ward chief of Seti zonal hospital.

Satya Rawal, of Sahajpur village, had to deliver her baby on the hospital premises without doctors´ help on Thursday after the hospital refused to provide service.

Suraj BK, a child from Pahalwanpur village, who was suffering from pneumonia, was not even admitted in the emergency ward. "My son is very sick. But, he did not receive treatment," Suraj´s mother told Republica.
