KATHMANDU, Jan 17: Police on Tuesday thwarted a general strike called by Samyukta Rashtriya Sukumbashi Morcha, a struggle committee of six different organizations of landless squatters, in the Kathmandu valley.

The Morcha had called a general strike for Tuesday in the Valley demanding that they not be removed from the banks of Bagmati and Manhara rivers without alternative arrangements.[break]

Hundreds of squatters took to the streets from early Tuesday morning to enforce their general strike. However, their attempt was foiled after police arrested over 400 squatters from several parts of the Valley.

Although squatters ransacked several vehicles, valley denizens defied the strike. Normal life was not disrupted in the valley at all.

The Morcha says it will announce stronger agitations by calling a meeting on Wednesday.

"We will decide more strong protest programs tomorrow," Basanta Jaishi, secretary of the Morcha, told Republica Tuesday evening. They have also criticized police for arresting children and women from various settlements along the Bagmati river.
