KATHMANDU, Jan 11: The title decider match of the Seventh Dhorpatan Blue Sky Cup Women´s Double League Volleyball Tournament has been postponed for Thursday due to poor visibility.

Six-time winner Gyanu Baba Higher Secondary School from Pokhara was leading the last league match against Nepal Police Club (NPC) 2-1 on Wednesday when the match was cancelled with NPC getting a chance to make amends for the setback with a fresh start next day. [break]

The organizers informed that the match will be played from the beginning on Thursday at the Dhorpatan Volleyball Training Center, New Bus Park, Balaju.

On Wednesday, defending champion Gyanu Baba registered a 25-13 win in the first set and lost the second set 20-25. Gyanu Baba bounced back to win the third set 25-17.

In Wednesday´s other matches, Armed Police Force (APF), New Diamond Academy and Tops Academy from Pokhara registered wins.

APF beat Tops 25-22, 25-11, 25-17 and finished in the third position with 24 points. New Diamond beat Angel´s Heart 25-13, 25-11, 22-25, 25-17 and Tops overcame New Diamond 25-20, 19-25, 25-18, 14-25, 18-16.

Poor Management

Poor management of Dhorpatan Blue Sky Cup Women´s Double League Volleyball Tournament was seen on Wednesday as the makeshift bamboo parapet build by the organizers collapsed causing injuries to four people.

Among the four injured spectators, one sustained facture in leg while the other three received minor injuries. The organizers will bear the cost for the treatment of the injured persons, said Manbir Chhantyal, tournament coordinator.

Despite poor management and foul-smelling locality near the banks of the Bishnumati river in Balaju, the tournament has been getting good response from unruly viewers because it features well-known national players.

The tournament allures the best teams of the country because it provides highest cash prize in Nepali volleyball at a time when Nepal Volleyball Association is struggling just to organize tournaments.

The organizers have increased the amount of cash prize and also announced to provide scooters for the best players as they cash in on the popularity of women´s volleyball among rowdy spectators, while they hardly organize tournament for the men´s category.

The mismanagement is evident from the fact that the sub-standard venue is hardly able to accommodate the crowd, which led to the accident on Wednesday.
