BAGLUNG, Jan 4: CPN-UML Secretary Shankar Pokharel said on Wednesday the government decision to scrap the all-party mechanisms at the local bodies was autocratic.

Speaking at a program organized by the Press Chautari Nepal, Baglung, the UML leader said the decision will trigger more corruption at the local bodies as there is no alternative created to run them. [break]

Saying that the decision violates spirits of the interim constitution, Pokharel added, “Either there should be elections of the local bodies, or the all-party mechanisms should be continued.”

He also blamed the lack of progress in the peace and constitution writing process on Maoists. “This is the price for trusting them. Maoists have not implemented past pacts,” .

“Now we want no more commitments. What we really need is implementation (of the pacts),” the UML leader said, adding that the new constitution would be a far cry unless the arms held by Maoist ex-combatants are managed first.
