The action plan, among others, will incorporate measures to generate employment opportunities and attain double-digit economic growth rate, he said addressing an event organized by Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry and Association of Eastern Nepal Chambers of Commerce and Industry.[break]
Stating that sustained economic growth is not possible without industrialization, the PM said a new wave of industrialization cannot be created unless three core problems -- power crisis, limping exports and increasing dependency on fossil fuel - are addressed.
To solve the problem of power shortage, the PM asked the private sector to resort to any means to generate electricity, be it using diesel, coal or wind.
He also urged the private sector to stop complaining about electricity shortage. “Invest in power projects. The government will support you in this endeavor,” PM Bhattarai told entrepreneurs in eastern Nepal, emphasizing that the government has identified public private partnership as one of the means to attain double-digit growth.
Talking to another group of entrepreneurs PM Bhattarai asked the private sector of the eastern Nepal to submit a proposal on bringing multi-fuel plant into operation so as to address the chronic problem of power shortage faced by industries located in Morang-Sunsari corridor.
The plant, which has a daily capacity of generating 39 MW of electricity, is currently being repaired at a cost of Rs 600 million provided by the World Bank.
Addressing a program organized by Morang Trade Association, the PM said: “Please submit a proposal within a week, including details on amount of subsidy required on purchase of diesel and tax discounts that entrepreneurs want so as to ensure proper functioning of the plant.”
