A budget of Rs 800,000 had been released to the District Development Committee (DDC) for the construction of Satghumti Thakam road. A consumers´ committee for building the road was constituted three weeks ago. Demanding that their representative head the committee, the Maoists had even filed a complaint at the DDC.
With dispute heating up, a verbal exchange had taken place between locals and Nawaraj Chapagain, secretary of UCPN (Maoist) village committee. The verbal exchange soon turned physical with villagers pushing Chapagain and leaving him with minor injuries.
Following the incident, Chapagain´s brother Raj Kumar Chapagain, and Young Communist League in-charge Bikash Bhandari led a group of six armed with sharp weapons that mounted the attack on local villagers.
All those injured are former Maoist cadres. The injured, who had helped the Maoists during the Constituent Assembly polls, had been angered by the Maoist party´s obstruction to road construction. These men who had toured the villages with sticks to secure victory for Maoist candidates during the election themselves came under attack on Saturday.
Locals have nabbed absconding Raj Kumar Chapagain and handed him over to a police team that reached the incident spot. The remaining assailants are at large.
