SPORTS BRIEFS: Olympic Solidarity course

KATHMANDU, Dec 5: Nepal Table Tennis Association on Monday started the Olympic Solidarity ITTF-PTT Level I Course in coordination with Nepal Olympic Committee and International Olympic Committee. The week-long course has altogether 26 participants. [break]



Whitefield basketball from Wednesday


KATHMANDU: The Fourth Whitefield Valley-wide Inter-school Basketball will begin from Wednesday. The tournament will be conducted in the senior and junior boys´ categories, the organizers informed during a press meet on Monday. The tournament will be held in league-cum-knockout format on the home court of Whitefield College in Khushibu, Naya Bazaar.



Gauri Shankar, AIA advance


KATHMANDU: Defending champion Gauri Shankar and host Awareness International Academy (AIA) on Monday entered the pre-quarterfinals of the Tenda AIA Inter-school Basketball Tournament in the junior boys´ category. Gaurav Subedi´s 13 points helped Gauri Shankar register a narrow margin 33-31 win over Innovative.



Host AIA thrashed Kanjirowa 32-8 as Samrat Basnet scored 13 points. Deneb and Golden Peak also registered wins in the junior boys´ category. In senior girls´ category, Valley Public defeated TIA 10-8 while Galaxy registered a 25-12 victory over Deneb.


B Division matches end in draws

KATHMANDU: Both the matches in the Martyrs Memorial Red Bull B Division Football League played on Monday ended in draws. In the matches held at Nepal Police Academy, Maharajgunj, Madhyapur Youth Association (MYA) played a 2-2 draw against Samajik Yuva Club, while Boys Union Club and Kathmandu Club played a 1-1 draw. Samajik had taken a fourth minute lead through Narayan Dhimal but Bivek Pratap Panta scored the equalizer five minutes later to make the score 1-1. Roshan Rai scored for MYA in the 24th minute but Lal Bahadur Lawati leveled the scores for Samajik in the 39th minute.



With the result, MYA has 11 points and Samajik has seven. Meanwhile, Kathmandu Club came from behind to earn a hard-fought draw after Boys Union Club had taken a 24th minute lead through Manish Ghale. Sanjay Thapa hit the equalizer for Kathmandu Club four minutes from time. The result lifted Boys Union to third place with 12 points while Kathmandu Club has 11 poitns.


Farewell to Kabaddi team

KATHMANDU: Nepal Kabaddi Association (NKA), recognized by National Sports Council, bade farewell to a 33-member Nepali Kabaddi team, including 12 male players and 14 female players, on Monday for the Kabaddi World Championship to be held in Faridabad, India. The team, including two coaches and five officials, will leave Kathmandu on Tuesday to participate in the championship that will kick off Friday and end on Sunday.



Altogether, 14 nations are participating in the tournament. Rashtriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Chairman Pashupati SJB Rana, NSC Member Secretary Yuvaraj Lama and the NKA President Lal Kumar Lama bade farewell to the Nepali team.


Korean players in Himalayan Sherpa

KATHMANDU: Yeti Himalayan Sherpa Club, top flight football club of Nepal has enrolled two Korean players in its squad for the National League to be held from December 29. The players, Jeong Jin Ho and Jang Byoung-ju, both aged 22, arrived in Nepal on Monday. Both of them have played university and college leagues in Korea according to a curriculum vitae of the Koreans forwarded by the Himalayan Sherpa via e-mail. Both of them are forwards.



The Korean players have vowed to put up their best performance in the national league. According to the club, the players arrived in Nepal as part of understanding between the club and Clean Sports Club of Korea.
