SPORTS BRIEFS: Greenland in quarters

KATHMANDU, Nov 9: Senior and junior teams of the host Greenland have fixed their place in the quarterfinals of the ongoing Kwiks Greenland Basketball Tournament on Wednesday.



Greenland defeated Innovative 50-26 in the senior category while the junior team beat Valley Public 20-16. [break]



In the other matches of the senior category, Forward Academy and Triyog School registered wins. Forward edged past Deep Jyoti 35-31 while Triyog thrashed Bagmati 45-18. In the junior boys´ game, AIA, Angel´s Heart and Health Care Academy also fixed their quarterfinal spots. AIA beat Sky Lark 15-12, Health Care Academy overcame Gyan Niketan 23-16 and Angel´s Heart beat Odyssey 28-15.


Baluwatar, Greenland off to winning start


KATHMANDU: Baluwatar Cricket Club and the host Greenland Children Academy (GCA) Blue won their respective matches in the opening day of the Wai Wai Women´s Regional Selection Cricket Tournament. In the matches played at the Sainik School ground in Bhaktapur on Wednesday, Balutwar Club defeated the host GCA Red by eight wickets while the other team of the host beat Trijyoti School by 89 runs.



Winning the toss, GCA Red opted to bat first and scored 56 runs losing six wickets in the allotted 20 overs. Baluwatar reached the target of 57 runs in just 11.2 overs losing two wickets. Sarita Magar was the highest scorer with 20 runs. In another match, GCA Blue lost the toss and was invited to bat first in the 10-over-reduced match. Batting first, GCA scored a mammoth 120 runs losing one wicket. Chasing the huge total of 121, Trijyoti could manage to score only 31 runs losing six wickets. Anita Tamang grabbed three wickets in two overs for the winning team.



Butwal English thrashes Jharkhand


KATHMANDU: Butwal Elite English School thrashed Jharkhand 8-0 in the ongoing U-14 52nd Subrato Mukherjee Cup Football Tournament in New Delhi on Wednesday. Suraj Hamal scored two goals while Shiva Subedi, Bimal Gharti Magar, Nishant Dhungana, Purna Bahadur Gurung, Akash Thapa and Roshan Gurung scored a goal each for the Nepali side. The Nepali team had earlier defeated Sikkim 2-1 in its first match.



The Nepali team will take on Gujarat on November 10 in its last league match of the tournament which is being organized by Indian Air Force. Butwal Elite School is the only team representing Nepal in the tournament.



Butwal United thrashes JSC



KATHMANDU: Butwal United thrashed Jharana Sports Club 4-1 in the ongoing Madhan Bhandari Gold Cup Fooball Tournament in Butwal on Wednesday. Butwal United dominated the game from the opening minutes. Butwal United took the lead through a goal from Govinda Poudel.



Pradeep Malla doubled the lead by the end of the first half. Sabindra Shrestha scored third goal and Malla scored his second goal to take the team to a commanding position. Mahesh Kunwar scored the consolation goal for Jharana Sports Club.


Nepal´s losing streak in kabaddi continues

KATHMANDU: Nepal´s losing streak continued in the ongoing World Cup Kabaddi Championship in New Delhi, India as the team lost 41-48 to Afghanistan on Wednesday. Nepal lost the game despite having taken a 26-21 lead by the end of the first half. Nepali players Munna Patel and Rajan Shilpakar got injured during the game.



Earlier, Nepal had lost its matches against India, Australia and Germany. Nepal will meet Canada in its next league match on Saturday.
