SPORTS BRIEFS: Nepali, Shrestha share joint lead

KATHMANDU, Oct 25: Nepal champion Badrilal Nepali and Keshav Shrestha shared joint lead Tuesday with 7.5 points apiece in the Chakratirtha Cup FIDE Rating Chess Tournament after the completion of ninth round match being held at Chobhar.



Nepali shared point with Madan Krishna Kayastha in the eighth round and beat Rijendra Rajbhandari in the ninth. [break]



Shrestha defeated Niraj Niraula and Madan Kayastha in the eighth and ninth round respectively to climb to the top spot. Nabin Tandukar is in second place with seven points. Tandukar beat Krishnahari Shrestha and Krishna Thapa respectively.



Similarly, Surendra Prasad Shrestha, Rajendra Prasad Shrestha, Niraj Niraula, Rajan Puri and Madan Krishna Kayastha have garnered 6.5 points each.



Rijendra Rajbhandari, Surbir Lama, Ganeshman Duwal, Herakaji Maharjan, Bikash Kuluju, Raju Subedi, Lawa Kumar Shrestha and Bikash Dangol have accumulated six points each. The final round of the tournament organized by Nepal Berogjar Yuva Samuha will be held Wednesday.



Nepal Red defeats Nepal Blue


KATHMANDU: Nepal Red defeated Nepal Blue by five wickets Tuesday in the practice match for SAARC T20 Championship played at the TU ground, Kirtipur. Being invited to bat first Nepal Blue captained by Binod Das made 103 runs losing eight wickets. Basanta Regmi topscored with 40 runs for Blue which included a six and three boundaries. Shakti Gauchan contributed 24 runs for Blue.



Avinash Karna, Rahul BK and Prithu Baskota claimed two wickets each of Blue. Following the run chase, Sharad Vesawkar scored 38 off 31 as Red surpassed the target in 18.2 overs losing five wickets. Mahesh Chhetri scored 22 and Pradip Airee scored unbeaten 10 runs. Binod Das claimed two wickets while Shakti Gauchan and Basanta Regmi hauled one wicket each of Red captained by Paras Khadka.



Cameroon United wins Sujan Memorial Football


KATHMANDU: Cameroon United clinched the title of the Fifth Sujan Memorial Six-A-Side Football Tournament held at Naya Bazar, Kathmandu. Cameroon defeated Khalibari Football Club 2-0 in the final.



The winner, Cameroon, bagged a purse of Rs 20,000 and the runner up Khalibari received Rs 10,000. Cameroon team studded with Cameroonian players who featured in the Nepal´s A Division League scored a goal each in either halves.



Moussongo David gave 10th minute lead to Cameroon and Zambo Thierry doubled the tally in the 49th minute to seal victory in the 60-minute match. All Nepal Football Association CEO Indraman Tuladhar gave away prizes to the winner and runner up teams.



Giri, Shrestha´s pair wins

BAGLUNG: Rajan Gurung and Ravi Shrestha´s pair on Wednesday won the Dhaulagiri Zonal Badminton Tournament being held in Baglung. The pair saw off Kumar Shrestha and Rajin Khadka´s pair 2-1 in the final.



Similarly, Rajendra Shakya and Pawan Shrestha´s pair, and Umesh KC and Umesh Rajbhandari´s pair were the semifinalist. The winner team won Rs 5,000 and the runner up Rs 3,000.



Baglung Chamber of Commerce wins volleyball

BAGLUNG: Baglung District Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BDCCI) secured first position in the volleyball tournament organized on the occasion of Bhakunde Festival in Baglung. BDCCI defeated Gaja Daha Group to secure the first position.



Bhipokhari Sports Development Committee secured third position. The top three teams bagged Rs 30,000, Rs 20,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively. Altogether 20 teams had participated in the event.
