KATHMANDU, Aug 20: With the timeframe for formation of national consensus government fast drawing to a close, President Dr Ram Baran Yadav and caretaker Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal held a meeting at the presidential residence in Shital Niwas on Saturday morning.

During the meeting, PM Khanal briefed President Yadav about the latest political developments on the formation of consensus government and progress in the peace and constitution writing processes, informed Rajendra Dahal, the President’s press advisor to this online. [break]

In so doing, the PM told the President that the political parties have been trying their best to form a consensus government but conceded that they would have to go for a majority government if their bid for consensus fails, according to Dahal.

On the occasion, President Yadav expressed concerns about the lack of progress in the peace and constitution writing processes and asked PM Khanal to duly take into account the legal and constitutional aspects, should the parties go for yet another extension of the Constituent Assembly tenure, Dahal said.

With Khanal already resigning as the PM, the President, as per existing constitutional provision, has set a time-frame till August 21 for political parties to name their candidates to head the consensus government and help sort out outstanding issues of the ongoing peace and constitution writing processes. The current term of CA expires on August 31.
