During the meeting held in Singha Durbar, the leaders expressed their views underscoring the need and importance of formation of a national consensus government, informed Prem Bahadur Singh, one of the committee members. [break]
After hearing what the leaders said, it could be hoped that there would be a consensus government soon in the country, Singh added. The seventeen-member monitoring committee is headed by Speaker Subash Chandra Nembang.
Caretaker Prime Minister and UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal, UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, NC President Sushil Koirala and Speaker Nembang, among others, were present in today’s meeting.
One of the five points in the agreement, struck by the three major parties while extending the Constituent Assembly term last May, states that PM Khanal shall resign to clear the way for national consensus government.
With Khanal already resigning as the PM, the onus now lies with the political parties to form a consensus government and help sort out outstanding issues of the ongoing peace and constitution writing processes.
As per existing constitutional provision, the President has set a time-frame till August 21 for political parties to name their candidates to head the consensus government.
The President will have to call for a parliamentary vote to elect the new PM if the bid to form consensus government fails.
