KATHMANDU, Aug 17: The price of major vegetables has fluctuated in the market over the period of a week.

Though prices of some seasonal vegetables have dropped in range of Rs 2 to Rs 6 per kg, popular vegetables in Nepali kitchen like dry onion, local cauliflower, cow pea and pumpkin have become costlier by as much as Rs 10 per kg.[break]

According to Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market Development Board (KFVMDB) - a government authority that oversees that management of Kalimati Fruits and Vegetable Market, price of seasonal vegetables like tomato, carrot, French bean, green soybean, smooth gourd, round brinjal, spinach leaf and mustard leaf have decreased by Rs 2 to Rs 6 per kg.

Traders say the price of pointed gourd has increased because of problems in supply from India.

Officials said price of major vegetables has increased due to lack of proper storage facility as vegetables decay quickly during monsoon. Binaya Shrestha, planning officer at the board, said prices of seasonal vegetables have decreased due to adequate supply on the back of high production.

“Prices of some vegetables have increased due to supply constraints,” Shrestha added. He further added that prices of pointed gourd and cauliflower have increased because of the upcoming Teej festival.

Heavy rise have been seen in prices of garlic. While Chinese garlic has increased by Rs 8 per kg, price of local garlic has increased by Rs 10 per kg.

“Price of garlic is increasing continuously, as garlic production has declined in recent months,” added Shrestha. He expected the price of garlic to increase further in the coming days.

Though price of most of the popular vegetables have fluctuated over the period, prices of red potato, white potato, long brinjal, sword bean and squash, however, have remained unchanged.
