Gurung, Karki enter tennis semifinals

KATHMANDU, Aug 14: Taraman Gurung of Sagarmatha Boarding, Pokhara, and Ganesh Karki of National Tennis Center (NTC) entered into the semifinals of U-18 boys´ singles in the Fifth LA/JTI Inter School Tennis Tournament.



Gurung humiliated Gaurav Shahi of NTC by 8-0 while Karki defeated Avilash Karki of Nepal Police School 8-4 in the quarterfinals played at the Satdobato Tennis Court on Sunday.[break]



Likewise, Pranjal Kayastha of Ullens thrashed David Tako of host Little Angels´ (LA) 8-1 and NTC´s Suman Karki edged past teammate Angel Gurung 8-4 to enter into the last four.



Bibhuti Karki of St Xavier´s, Mayanka Rana of Rupy´s International, Gita Shrestha of LA and Bijisha Shrestha of DAV stormed into the semifinals of the U-14 girls´ singles. Karki eased past LA´s Anushiya Gosain 8-0, Rana defeated Shiwalika Rana of British School 8-2, Gita Shrestha beat Mahika Rana of Rupy´s 8-5 and Bijisha Shrestha crushed Pritika Manandhar of St Xavier´s 8-1 during the quarterfinals.



Akshat Karki, Suyash Nahata, Ganesh Karki, Suman Karki, Prashant Sharma, Gaurav Shahi, David Tako and Ivannoe Lissanevitch reached the quarterfinals of the U-16 boys´ singles while Sudarshan Sigdel, Pranav Kayastha, Binay Chandra Yadav, Avi Shrestha, Saksham Karki and Avay Gauchan booked their spots in the last eight of the U-14 boys´ singles.



Likewise, Swaraj KC, Kijen Shakya, Deep Rana, Pema T Ghale, Avi Joshi, Aryan Subedi and Shreya Shrestha and Adit Subedi are through in the U-9 boys´ singles after winning their respective matches at the court of LA School, Hattiban. Kijen Shakya was also adjudged as Nike Lucky Player of the Day later and received gift hampers of Rs 5000. Utsavi Joshi, Ashiyana Prasain, Shivalika Rayamajhi, Raisa Baidya, Babita Rana, Nima Roka, Shivangi Chand and Avilasha Bista reached the quarterfinals of the U-9 girls´ singles.



In the U-12 boys´ singles, Rishav Karki, Saksham Karki, Pranav Khanal, Bipin Thapa, Nabin Joshi and Kastup Pandey as well as Bajracharya brothers Samrakshan Bhusan and Samyak Bhusan completed the quota of last eight.



Karuna Gauchan, Utshavi Joshi, Labita Gurung, Melvi Rai, Chhimi Sherpa, Cathy Mathema and Alisha Regmi reached the quarterfinals of the U-10 girls´ singles while Arjan Dhungel, Utshav Joshi, Swaraj KC, Anish Bande, Umesh Yadav, Ankit Gupta and Deep Rana stromed into the quarterfinals of the U-10 boys´ singles.


Bhagavati Club defeats Naxal



A brace from Baibhav Chand helped Shree Bhagavati Club defeat Naxal Yuva mandal 4-0 in the Martyrs Memorial Red Bull C Division League Football Tournament on Sunday.



Chand scored the opener in the sixth minute and added another in the 54th minute. Chand´s second goal came just a few minutes after Subash Sharma scored an own goal for Naxal.



Kiran Shrestha completed the rout in the 89th minute to seal the match 4-0.



In another match, Shree Kumari Club defeated Samaj Kalyan Sports Centre 1-0. Kailash Rai scored the lone goal in the match played at the ANFA Technical Center, Chyasal to steer Kumari Club to victory.



Ongdi wins junior golf



Sonam Ongdi, 13, won the Gokarna Junior Golf Tournament on Sunday at the Gokarna Golf Club, Kathmandu.



Ongdi scored 19 points to clinch the title on count back. Tenzing Palden was tied with Ongdi, but he didn´t earn any points on the last hole to lose the title on the count back.



Tenzing Tsering was awarded with the best golfer award in the 12 and below age group.



Altogether 12 junior golfers took part in the competition. The competition was played under stableford format with 3/4 handicap. Lady golfer Chanda Rana gave away the prizes to the winners.



Galaxy Cup Swimming from Monday



The 11th Galaxy Cup Agegroup and Open Swimming Championship is all set to begin from Monday at the Satdobato Swimming Pool.



There are 59 events in the two-day tournament organized by Nepal Swimming Association (NSA) and sponsored by Galaxy Public School.



According to NSA, 250 swimmers are participating in agegroup events while 75 swimmers are contesting in the open category.



Meanwhile, 30 swimmers will compete in the masters´ category, which is introduced for the first time in Nepali swimming. The open category events of the championship will also be the preliminary selection tournament for the 12th South Asian Games to be held in India in 2012.



In the preliminary selection 18 male and 12 female swimmers will be picked for training.



Indrachowk Chess from Aug 29



Indrachowk Club is organizing Open FIDE Rating Chess Tournament from August 29. Club, organizing a press conference, informed that the tournament will be played under Swiss League format in nine rounds.



According to Club´s President Krishna Man Singh, altogether 70 chess players, including 40 rated players, will contest in the tournament. The winner will receive Rs 11000 while runner-up will get Rs 8000.
