KATHMANDU, Dec 25: CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has said that the present row over the formation of the National Assembly (NA) will be resolved in the next few days. Addressing the 47th anniversary of Pragati Secondary School in Shukranagar, Chitwan, on Sunday, the former prime minister said he had held “serious talks” with CPN-UML Chairman K P Sharma Oli to resolve the dispute.

“The constitution does not specifically say anything about the formation of the National Assembly. This is the reason why some differences have surfaced among the parties,” he said.

Dahal said the parties had initially reached an understanding to adopt the majority-based electoral system and a draft was prepared accordingly. “But later, the majority-based system was removed by the Nepali Congress. If we adopt the single transferable voting system, it will be difficult to elect three women and other people from the marginalized groups. So we must adopt the majority-based electoral system,” he said.

“But the presence of the opposition is a must in the upper house. I had serious discussions on the issue with Chairman Oli. The dispute over the formation of the National Assembly will be resolved in a few days,” he further said.

Addressing a separate function in Chitwan, Dahal also brushed aside rumors created by some online media on the unity between the UML and the Maoist Center. “There are no issues in party unity. If anyone still believes that there will be no unity between the two parties, this will be just a fantasy,” he said.
