Prices of rice, lentil, vegetables and meat have gone up sharply within the past one week. [break]
The per kg price of Mansuli rice was between Rs. 40 and Rs. 46 a week ago. However, it has reached Rs. 50 now. Pothi Mansuli rice can only be bought at Rs 57 from Rs. 49 earlier.
Similarly, the per kg price of Basmati rice has climbed to Rs. 66 from Rs. 59. Meat has made a whooping jump. From a week ago’s Rs 180 per kg, chicken has crosses Rs 245. Local traders say the prices lentil varieties have increased by 20 percent.
Grocers have their own reason to defend the price hike. “When the salaries of government employees go up prices of daily essentials will also naturally increase,” said Rupabati Chaudhary, a local rice trader.
The price rise has hit hard people. “The commoners have been victimized as the government encouraged traders to hike prices of daily essentials by increasing salary of its employees,” said a local consumer, Raj Kumar Karki.
