Minister Tamang threatens to ban both NOC

KATHMANDU, July 23: Minister of Youth and Sports Hit Bahadur Tamang had threatened to ban both existing Nepal Olympic committees if they do not come united.



Two Olympic committees, one headed by Dhruba Bahadur Pradhan and recognized internationally and the other recognized by National Sports Council (NSC) and headed by Rukma Sumsher Rana, are currently in existence.[break]



"I have directed both the committees to bring a consensus proposal. If they fail to do so, I will initiate a process to get both the committees banned through cabinet decision," Tamang said at an interaction program.



Tamang also revealed his plans of expanding sports at Village Development Committee level, construction of physical infrastructure at different places and end political interference in sports.



Tamang also said that he was ready to leave his post if party called him back.



NSC Member Secretary Yubaraj Lama said that the main aim of NSC currently was to focus on the close camp training for upcoming South Asian Games (SAG) and prepare for the Sixth National Games scheduled to be held in Far Western Region. He also hinted of shifting the venue for the national games if there was not sufficient infrastructure for conducting games.



Amatya clinches KEGG golf



Dibya Amatya clinched the title of the Kathmandu Eager Golfers Group (KEGG) Tournament on Saturday.



Amatya scored 37 stableford points in the tournament played at the Gokarna Forest Golf Resort under Stableford format with ¾ handicaps.



Amatya, playing off 14 handicaps, scored 22 points on the front nine and 15 points on the back nine.



Sumod Bastakoti and Subodh Thapa were both tied with 35 points but Bastakoti finished as runner up on the count back.



Prasanna Uprety won the best gross award with the gross score of 30 stableford points. Arnav Rana was the best junior golfer in the tournament.



Altogether 36 golfers participated in the tournament. President of Gokarna Golf Club Suhrid Ghimire gave away the prizes to the winners.


Second veteran chess kicks off



Former national champions Punyaman Karmancharya, Nabin Tandukar and Olympian Rajendra Prasad Shrestah started the Second National Veteran Chess that kicked off on Saturday on a winning note.



Similarly, Ganeshman Duwal, Rabindra Shakya, Bijayman Shrestha, Sanukaji Maharjan, Sitaram Agrawal, Mohan Singh Pradhan, Laxman Regmi, Rajendra Prasad Rijal, Jhamak Prasad Pyakural and Rajan Singh Prajapati also scored one point each winning first board match.



Manoj Chitrakar and Gyanendra Prasad Shrestha, and Krishna Prasad Shrestha and Sanjay Sapkota shared the point after playing a draw. Earlier, Bishnu Prasad Dhakal, the local development officer of Lalitpur District Development Committee inaugurated the event.  



Budhanilkantha School qualify for final round



Budhanilkantha School on Saturday became the last team to qualify for the final round of Coca-Cola Cup Inter School Boys Football Tournament on Saturday from Kathmandu region.



Budhanilkantha School defeated Budhanilkantha Higher Secondary School 3-1 in group D final held at ANFA ground, Satdobato.



Sonam Tamang netted twice and Nabin BK added another for the winning side. Bivek Bhandari hit the only goal for Budhanilkantha Higher Secondary School.



Earlier, Siddhartha Vanasthali, GEMS, and Sainik Awasiya Mahavidyalaya had already qualified for the final round. Meanwhile, Nandi High School, KU High School and St Xaviers started their campaign on winning note in the girls´ event that kicked off on Saturday at the same venue. In the kick off match, RIBS enjoyed walkover from Bright Future.
