KATHMANDU, June 16: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed serious concerns over the gang rape of a verbally-challenged woman from Shivaraj municipality in Kapilvastu district by Armed Police Force (APF) personnel.

Four days after the gang rape, NHRC on Thursday issued a press release calling the government to immediately take action against the APF personnel involved in the crime following a proper investigation. The constitutional body has also urged the government to arrange instant medical treatment to the victim.

The NHRC has also directed Nepal Police to probe into the case and inform the constitutional body about its progress.

On Sunday, some APF personnel from Vindhyavasini Battalion had reportedly gang raped the woman.

According to NHRC Spokesperson and Commissioner Mohna Ansari, the Butwal-based Sub-Regional Office of NHRC has started its investigation into the incident.

She also informed that the human rights watchdog has written letter to the headquarters of Nepal Police and Armed Police Force and the Attorney General's Office to draw their attention and investigate into the incident.

Meanwhile, the NHRC has also called all the stakeholders to provide all necessary support to Nepal Police for conducting a fair investigation.
