Even though there were other five candidates in the fray, they couldn’t influence the voters. Khem Chhetry of CPIM and Prem Newar of Bodoland People´s Front(BPF) from Sootea constituency, Ganesh Limbu and Ritubaran Sarmah of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from Borsola and Tezpur constituencies and former minister Padum Bahadur Chauhan of the main opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) had to bite the dust in the elections.

A total of 18,145,914 voters of Assam elected 126 members of legislative assembly from the contesting 981 candidates from various political parties and independents. Out of 126 elected, 78 belong to the Congress forming an absolute majority. On May 18, Tarun Gagoi has been sworn in as the chief minister of Assam for the third consecutive term.
