BANGALORE, May 30: More than 30 people, including 10 children, were killed when a bus hit a police barricade, flipped over and was engulfed in flames in southern India early Sunday, news reports said.

At least 28 others were injured, some seriously, when the vehicle´s fuel tank caught fire after it overturned, trapping the passengers inside, the Press Trust of India news agency said.[break]

The bus was headed for Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka state, when the accident occurred near Chitradurga town, it said.

The driver was among those killed, PTI said.

Police often put up barricades across roads to conduct road checks. The barricades are sometimes not clearly visible on badly lit roads.

Reckless driving, aging vehicles and overloading contribute to the high number of road accidents in India.
