DHANGADI, Aug 14: Three pilgrims have died of altitude sickness and dozens fell ill while visiting Surma Sarovar, a holy lake in Bajhang, on the occasion of Hindu festival Janai Purnima.

The deceased have been identified as Raisingh Chalaune, 60, and Naresh Bohara, 16, of Lek Gaun-2, and Singhe Rana, 65, of Subeda-5, according to the District Police Office, Bajhang.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) with Bajhang Police Surya Bahadur KC said the pilgrims fell ill as they were traveling empty stomach and bare foot.

DSP KC said the place is a two-day trek from the nearest police station and details about the incident have yet to come.

Many pilgrims had reportedly retreated from their pilgrimage midway after falling ill. Surma Sarovar is in the border of Daulichaur and Surma Village Development Committee and is considered one of the important religious and tourist place in the district.

Police said the lake is second highest place in the district after Saipal Himal.
