More than 10 percent of the total force of 325 deployed there had diarrhea in the morning after eating at the mess the night before and were rushed to the Birendra Police Hospital, raising alarms about swine flu. But the doctors there diagnosed the problem to have been caused by food-poisoning and not swine flu, which doesn´t cause diarrhea.
“Twenty-three policemen have been discharged and the rest are recovering at the hospital,” Special Superintendent of Police at the airport Ganesh Raj Rai said. “They fell ill due to contaminated food and water. We are here to help the airport authority, and they make the arrangements for the drinking water for us,” Rai said.
Epidemiologist Dr Manas Kumar Banerjee said that he got in touch with the police hospital authorities and confirmed it to be bacillary dysentery.
