KATHMANDU, August 23: The special general assembly of the elected committee of Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has begun in Kathmandu on Tuesday.

The assembly started with a situation of compulsion to endorse the new statute of CAN as per the guidelines of the International Cricket Council (ICC).  An advisory committee formed by ICC was given a mandate of making a new statute to replace the older one and the new statue is supposed to be endorsed by the special general assembly of CAN.

Meanwhile the special general assembly called to discuss the same matter is likely to endorse the new statue with some amendments. Speaking at the opening session CAN's elected committee president Chatur Bahadur Chand said that his faction won't be an obstacle for holding the new election.  “We can't move ahead bypassing the stake holders of the Nepali cricket. This general assembly can endorse the new statute with or without the amendments and it will pave a way for a solution to the issues of Nepali cricket,” said Chand.

However one of the members from the advisory committee, who did not want to be named, said that if the special general assembly does not pass the new statute without any amendment, the  ICC could suspend the membership of Nepal.

If the general assembly cannot endorse the new statute, the advisory committee will have to submit the other optional proposal to ICC with in August 26. ICC had suspended the membership of CAN.

The elected CAN's general secretary Ashok Nath Pyakurel said that the current situation was important instance to solve the Nepali cricket issues. He also said that the statute can be amended as per the situation. “There has been agreement on many points among the members of the advisory committee but we have a disagreement on some points,” said Pyakurel, who is one of the members of the advisory committee.  “As per the mandate was given to the advisory committee, we are putting the new statute for discussion at this special general assembly. Now the responsibility is given to this assembly for further decision,”

Chand's faction has demanded to secure the participation of every district and the members of the elected committee in the upcoming CAN general assembly. However, the advisory committee has agreed to allow the participation of the districts in the general assembly but hasn't agreed to allow the members of the elected committee.
