This is the third time that Shakya has won the title.[break]
Shakya defeated Birendra Oli of Mahakali in the final. Shakya bagged a purse of Rs 30,000 while Oli got Rs 15,000 from the organizers, Nepal Kyokushin Karate Do Association.
Birman Lama of Bagmati and Kanchhalal Waiba finished third and fourth. Lama and Waiba received Rs 7,500 and Rs 3,500, respectively.
Meanwhile, Jyoti Lama beat Sunita Gurung in the clash of Bagmati karatekas for the women´s open title. Shiwani Lama of Koshi and Menuka Giri of Janakpur finished third and fourth, respectively.
Prativa Majhi of Bagmati defeated Sabita Shrestha of the same zone in the final of women´s U-55 kg weight category. Manisha Lama and Yamkumari Gahamagar of Narayani secured the third and fourth spots.
The top four players in both the women´s sections were awarded cash prizes of Rs 8,000, Rs 4,000, Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000, respectively.
Japanese ambassador Tatsuo Mijuro distributed the prizes to the winners.
Pugilist Maharjan honored
Meanwhile, boxer Deepak Maharjan who fetched Nepal the only medal--a bronze--in the 16th Asian Games was also felicitated during the event. Maharjan was awarded a cash prize of Rs 45,000, and was also conferred black belt first dan by Shihan Jagat Prasad Gauchan, the founder of Kyokushin Karate in Nepal. Maharjan is also a former kyokushin karate player.
Likewise, Bajrakumar Rai, the gold medalist of the 11th Asian Open Full Contact Championship held in Singapore in 2008, was given a letter of appreciation.
Altogether 46 players, including 24 female players, had participated in the two-day event.
