Giri takes lead at Gokarna

KATHMANDU, Dec 26: Samundra Giri took the lead in the individual category on day one of the Western Union-NGA National Amateur Golf Championship on Sunday. Giri scored gross 73 on the Gokarna Forest Golf Course to lead the three-day event.



Giri was the nett winner of the first day with four under par 68 points,while Laxman Pun was the nett runner-up with 70 points. Giri also won the award for most birdies of the day.[break]



Mrs Hong was the winner in the ladies´ category with 76 points and Pushpa Rai the runner-up with 78.



Kanchan Basnet was the guest winner while South Korean Ambassador to Nepal Sung Mong Hong finished runner-up in the category. Mithun Rai won the award for longest drive of the day while Wangchen Dhondup claimed the award for closest to the pin.



Nepal Golf Association (NGA) President Vinode SJB Rana, NGA past presidents PK Shrestha and Madhukar Yakthumba, President of Royal Nepal Golf Club (RNGC) Prachanda B Shrestha and Western Union´s Regional Manager Atish Krishna Shrestha gave away the prizes to the winners.



In the men´s team event, the hosts Gokarna Forest Golf Resort took the lead on the first day. Gokarna have 241 points after adding the best three scores of the team members. RNGC and Himalayan Golf Club, Pokhara have equal 251 points in total while Army Officers Golf Club have 252 gross in total and Nirvana Country Club, Dharan have 294 points in total.



Gokarna are leading the ladies´ team event with 210 points after adding the best two scores while RNGC and Himalayan Golf Club, Pokhara have equal 228 points in total.



Top 60 golfers and ties qualified for the second round of the individual event to be held at Army Club on Monday. The final 40 golfers will then compete for the titles in the final round at the RNGC on Tuesday. The championship is sponsored by Western Union.
