KATHMANDU, July 10: In view of the upcoming provincial and central parliamentary elections, the Election Commission (EC) is preparing to register voter registration in all 75 district election offices from mid-July.

"Voter registration for the upcoming elections is starting from July 16 although it is yet to be formally decided. Most probably, the commission will take a decision to this effect within a couple of days," said EC Spokesperson Surya Prasad Sharma.

The voter registration, according to Spokesperson Sharma, will last for 15 days. "Although we have time constraint, we are opening voter registration for the upcoming elections so that missing voters can get registered into voter roll ensuring their participation in the voting process," said Sharma.

District election offices will register eligible voters at the respective office when they appear before the office with citizenship cards.  Unlike previous provisions, voters have to appear before their respective election offices with the required document.

Spokesperson Sharma said the commission will not be able to register voters living outside their districts.  "Voters must go to their home district to get registered with voter roll as we have no adequate time to collect their details from other districts and accommodate them within the short time period," said Sharma.

Altogether 14 million voters are registered with the election body so far. But the EC believes many voters are still left out.
