225 killed, 49 missing in monsoon-induced disasters so far this year

KATHMANDU, Sept 16: Since the onset of monsoon this year, 225 people have died due to monsoon-induced disasters.

Monsoon entered Nepal on June 10 this year. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), 225 people have died from monsoon-induced incidents in 90 days from June 10 to September 7.

According to NDRRMA, 49 people have gone missing and 284 people have been injured during this period. The number of families affected by the monsoon disaster has reached 4,615.

During the same period last year, 85 people died from monsoon incidents, 29 people went missing and 126 people were injured. Last year, the number of disaster-affected families was 6,030.

According to the data of NDRRMA,Bagmati Province recorded the highest number of fatalities with 57 deaths, while Madeh Province reported the fewest with five deaths. Among the monsoon-related disasters, the highest number of deaths with 135 fatalities has been caused by landslides.

Similarly, two buses carrying 62 passengers went missing in the Trishuli River on July 12 after being swept away by landslides at Simaltal along the Narayanghat-Mugling road section in Chitwan district. The bodies of only 24 people have been found, while the rest of the passengers are still missing.
This year, Dodhara Chandani in Kanchanpur experienced record-high rainfall.  NDRRMA reported that the area received 624 mm of rainfall, the highest in the 77-year history of measurement carried out by the government.
