DHARAN, Sept 6: Three weeks after journalist Lila Nath Ghimire was attacked by one Thaman Gurung allegedly at the behest of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mingmar Lama, police on Monday registered a complaint lodged against the Gurung and Lama.

Earlier, police had refused to register Ghimire´s complaint on several pretexts despite protests by journalists. [break]

Ghimire had moved the Appellate Court in Biratnagar demanding that the police register his complaint. The appellate court had on September 3 ordered District Police Office (DPO) of Sunsari and Area Police Office (APO) of Dharan to accept Ghimire´s complaint.

However, even after the court order, police did not promptly accept Ghimire´s complaint citing unavailability of court letter.

After formally registering a complaint lodged by Ghimire´s father Bal Krishna, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Uma Shankar Panjiyar said that he would take necessary action as per the law. Ghimire has lodged a complaint against SSP Lama and Gurung on the charge of attempted murder.

Ghimire was thrashed by Gurung in the presence of SSP Lama when he took pictures of them while drinking and dancing in a restaurant. Gurung has already been taken into custody by police. SSP Lama has denied having instructed Lama to attack Ghimire.
