Located in Dilli Bazaar of Kathmandu, Bhojan Griha is a restaurant that exclusively serves typical Nepali cuisines and showcases Nepali folk dances. Its distinctly Nepali decor renders a pleasant vibrancy to the entire ambience of the eatery.[break]

And it now has a new addition – Kheti Bazaar.

Boasting organically produced food items, Kheti Bazaar is a shop within the restaurant premises and stands for making ethical food choices and providing fresh, sustainable food in order to develop a healthy lifestyle and environment.

“We sell everything from vegetables, rice, lentils, spices, honey, herbal and milk products like cheese, which are all organic,” shares Subechhya Basnet who took the initiative of starting the shop inside the restaurant owned by her father Bharat Basnet.

She continues, “We have tea and coffee from Palpa, honey from Jumla, and vegetables from Kathmandu itself. Basically, we bring in all the exotic items from all over Nepal under one roof.”

Talking about the concept behind the Bazaar, the lover of organic foods puts in, “People mostly consume inorganic foods which are grown with chemicals and contain coloring additives. Since there are limited suppliers of organic foods, that’s how I got the idea of starting the shop.”

An interesting aspect of the shop is that all the items are stored in handmade Nepali doko-s – bamboo/cane woven baskets – and packed in recycled paper in order to avoid using plastic bags.

If customers return the honey jars, they even get rebates.

“The main goal is to disseminate information and spread awareness on smart ways of shopping,” states the 27-year-old and elaborates, “When we consume inorganic foods, we’re indirectly consuming chemicals. So switching to organic food is a far healthier option.”

Moreover, the organic veggies available at Kheti Bazaar are locally grown, and therefore, it also helps local farmers financially and creates incentives for them.

She further opines that inorganic foods have negative impact on wildlife as well because chemical runoffs from fields contaminate water sources which flora and fauna rely on.

Kheti Bazaar opens daily, from 9 am to 9 pm. For more information, contact 4411603 or visit www.khetibazaar.com
