SPORTS BRIEFS: Valley Public, TIA set up title clash

KATHMANDU, Aug 31: Defending champions Valley Public A and Trungram International Academy (TIA) on Tuesday set up the title clash under girls´ section in the Fifth Valley Public Inter-school Basketball Tournament.



Valley Public recorded a comfortable 23-7 win over Mahendra Bhawan in the semifinal. Laxmi Shrestha and Shanti Tamang netted 11 points apiece for the winning side. Likewise, TIA eased past Angels´ Heart 25-12. Anushka Malla scored 12 points for TIA. [break]



Under the boys´ section, Baba and Daffodil made it through to the final. Baba ousted Neric 52-40. Nima Sherpa contributed 12 points for Baba. Likewise, riding on 14 points of Akran Rai, Daffodil beat Greenland 42-37.



The final will be held on Thursday.





Arniko, Sambotta in semis



KATHMANDU, Aug 31: Arniko, Sambotta, hosts Wilson and Ullens on Thursday advanced into the semifinals under senior boys´ section of the 10th Wilson Valley-wide Inter-school Basketball Tournament winning their respective matches.



Arniko had a narrow 53-52 win over Pennwood. Himal Pandey contributed 28 points for Arniko. Sambotta registered a hard fought 52-51 win over NIMS. Samir Tamang contributed 15 points for the winning side.



Riding on 20 points of Binay Rai, hosts Wilson beat HIMS 69-60. Likewise, Ullens thrashed Unique 54-24. Kishan Nepali netted 18 points for Ullens.





Prithvi, Teresa lift titles



KATHMANDU, Aug 31: Prithvi and Teresa won the junior boys´ and girls´ title respectively on Tuesday in the Third Odyssey Inter-school Basketball Tournament.



In the entertaining boys´ final, Prithvi beat Unique 39-38. Jamyang Sherpa scored 10 points for Prithvi. Sherpa won the most valuable player award.



In girls´ final, Teresa defeated Pennwood 32-25. Manju Wanu of the winning side, also adjudged the most valuable player, contributed 11 points for the winning side.



Senior Vice-president of Nepal Basketball Association Narendra Thapa distributed prizes to the winners and runners-up.
