SPORTS BRIEFS: Nyatapol win boys' team event

KATHMANDU, Aug 30: Nyatapol School won the title of boys´ team event in the ongoing First National Inter-school Table Tennis Tournament (Baraha Jewelry Cup) on Monday.



Nyatapol defeated Prabhat School 3-1 in the final of the event, while Everest and Bal Bikas School jointly seured third position. [break]



Meanwhile, Irika Maharjan of Bijeshwari School won gold in the girls´ U-14 category. Maharjan defeated her schoolmate Norden Tamang 11-9, 9-11, 8-11, 12-10, 11-7 in the final. Suravi Thapa of DAV and Nihita Koju of Annapurna School claimed bronze in the event.



Meanwhile, Manita Chitrakar (Annapurna) and Sunita Lama (Bijeshwari) reached the final of the girls´ U-16 event. Chitrakar defeated Palpasa Prajapati of Lisa School 11-8, 11-4, 11-6 and Lama stunned Kajol Rauniyar 13-11, 11-5, 11-5 in the simifinals.



Likewise, Raju Shrestha (AVM) and Narayan Ghimire of Horizon School, Butwal advanced into the final of boys´ U-10. Shrestha thrashed Deepak Pancha of Bal Bikas School 11-4, 9-11, 11-4, 8-11, 11-5 in the semifinals, while Ghimire beat Dilip Gurung of AVM 11-7, 11-6, 11-6 in straight sets.







NTA completes selection for Asiad



KATHMANDU, Aug 30: Nepal Taekwondo Association (NTA) completed the final selection of 12 players for participation in the 16th Asian Games on Monday. NTA picked 12 players, including six women, after the final selection tournament held in Kathmandu on Monday.



According to National Sports Council, South Asian Games silver medalist Kumar Manandhar of Nepal Police Club (NPC) will represent Nepal in men´s 54 kg while Sujan Pujari of Kathmandu will compete in 58 kg in Guangzhou.



Likewise, Armed Police Force´s Sujan Joshi and Ashish Maharjan will play in the 63 and 68 kg category respectively while army personnel Dan Bahadur Aire and Yadav Paudel will fight in 74 kg and 80 kg category respectively.







The women players qualified for the Asian Games are Yankumari Chaulagain (Bara, 46 kg), Laxmi Rana (Rupandehi, 49 kg), Ayasha Shakya (Lalitpur, 53 kg), Sabina Maharjan (NPC, 57 kg), Manita Shahi (NPC, 62 kg) and Rasana KC (Kathmandu, 67 kg). Shakya is a gold medalist of the 11th South Asian Games while Shahi had won silver medal in the SAG.
