KATHMANDU, Aug 16: Nepali Congress (NC) has taken strong exception to the decisions made by parliamentary party meeting of the CPN-UML held on Monday.

NC expressed strong reservations over the decision of the UML parliamentary party meeting to call for withdrawal of prime ministerial candidatures and amendment to the legislature-parliament Regulations. [break] The UML PP meeting also decided to stay neutral in the fifth round of voting scheduled for August 18 to pave way for consensus.

NC leader Krishna Prasad Sitaula said the decision of the UML PP meeting is against the spirit of Interim Constitution, the Parliament Regulations and norms and values of democratic exercise. "We are surprised why Jhalanathji got this kind of decision passed through his parliamentary party meeting," he said.

Sitaula said the parties entered the current process to elect prime minister of majority government after their efforts to form national consensus government failed. "We will take up this matter with pointedly with Jhalanathji," he added.

NC leaders have also objected to the UML proposal to amend the existing Parliament Regulations. They argued that the ongoing process of electing prime minister must be brought to a logical end before taking any decision to amend the Regulations.

"We have entered the process to elect new prime minister after Prime Minister Madhav Nepal tendered his resignation," said another NC leader. "The decision of the prime minister´s party to stay neutral in the vote for prime minsiter is just objectionable."

NC leaders said a scheduled meeting between UML and NC was put off at eleventh hour on Monday after UML Chairman Khanal said he did not have time for meeting.
