GC, Ghani advance into second round

KATHMANDU, Aug 3: Bivek GC of Baglung and Riyajuddin Iyaz Ghani of Banke advanced into the second round under men´s singles in the 34th National Badminton Tournament that began at the Dasharath Stadium covered hall on Tuesday.



GC had a three-set 23-25, 21-11, 21-15 victory over Nirmal Rai of Lalitpur and Ghani eased past Nitesh Bhatta of Darchula 21-5, 21-7. [break]



In the same category, Sahil Shrestha of Palpa had a comfortable 21-9, 21-8 win over Hari Gautam of Dhading and Ganesh Rayamajhi of Nepal Police Club (NPC) registered a straight set 21-15, 23-21 win over Niranjan Shahi of Chitwan.



Likewise, Sailesh Dahal of Lalitpur outplayed Megh Bahadur Tamang of Dhading 21-10, 21-10, Deepak Bhatta of Kanchanpur beat Aman Shrestha of Sankhuwasabha 22-24, 21-10, 21-15, Adarsha Bista of Kailali coasted past Bishal Rai of Lalitpur 21-18, 10-21, 21-19 and Rajesh Chand of Kanchanpur saw off Sanjay KC of Kavre 21-14, 19-21, 21-9 to make it through to the second round.







In U-15 boys´ singles, Santosh Khadka of Sunsari outplayed Surendra Raut of Kathmandu 21-5, 21-15; Ayush Bahadur Shah of Kathmandu ousted Nischal Gurung of Dang 21-4, 21-3; Rabindra Shiwakoti of Kavre beat Ajit Gurung of Parvat 21-6, 21-23, 21-8 to secure berths in the second round.



In U-15 girls´ singles, Suriya Pradhan of Bhojpur defeated Rejina Karki of Kavre 21-13, 21-9.



In men´s team event, Kavre thrashed Morang 3-0, Banke beat Myagdi 3-1, Baglung edged past Sunsari 3-2, Kaski pipped Palpa 3-2, Mahottari downed Kanchanpur 3-1, Lalitpur beat Parvat 3-1 and NPC thrashed Dhading 3-0 to book their places in the second round. In women´s team event, Kaski outclassed Morang 2-0.







The tournament organized by Lalitpur District Badminton Association under the aegis of Nepal Basketball Association will feature 12 different events. Altogether 417 players are contesting in the tournament.



Earlier, Nepal Police IGP Rameshchand Thakuri had inaugurated the tournament amidst a function at the Patan Durbar Square.
