KATHMANDU, June 17: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has claimed that one 46-year old Sanu Sunuwar of Lalitpur died on May in police custody due to excessive torture. It has recommended action against police officials who had handled Sunuwar in custody.

“Our investigation has found that police officials from Kalanki and Kalimati police offices were involved in beating Sunuwar. Sunuwar had sustained serious injuries while he was under detention,” said an NHRC report.

Police had arrested Sunuwar, along with two others from Kalimati, on May 25 over a minor dispute at Kahibazaar, Kalimati. He was then taken to Kalimati police office where he was beaten severely, according to eyewitnesses´ account to the NHRC.

Sunuwar then started vomiting and was taken to Bir Hospital where he succumbed to death, according to a hospital report taken by the NHRC during the investigation.
