KATHMANDU, May 28: A meeting of senior leaders of the Nepali Congress on Friday morning ruled out the resignation of Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and appealed to all parties to vote in favor of the extension of the Constituent Assembly. The CA term is expiring Friday midnight.

"The prime minister won´t resign just to appease the UCPN (Maoist)," a leader said after the meeting. "The party has still not shown flexibility on integration and rehabilitation of the Maoist combatants." [break]

The NC has maintained that the UCPN (Maoist) have to agree to just one of the six contentious issues that the three big parties agree to resolve -- a time-bound agreement on integration and rehabilitation of former Maoist combatants. The NC and the CPN-UML also want the Maoists to honor past commitment on the number of Maoist combatants to be integrated into the security forces.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the parliamentary party of the CPN-UML asked all the parties to vote for the CA term´s extension. The party chairman Jhala Nath Khanal exuded the confidence that the term would be extended by Friday evening.

Our correspondent, meanwhile reported from the CA building*, that the party´s Standing Committee is meeting to discuss the party´s next move in view of the NC and the UML reiterating their position.

The CA meeting that was to convene at 8 a.m. Friday is yet to commence. However, CA members from various parties have begun to reach the CA hall in New Baneshwar.
