KATHMANDU, Feb 27: The Chinese government has proposed to the government of Nepal to sign a new ´peace and friendship treaty´ between the two countries in the changed political context in Nepal, reported Kantipur daily on Friday.

The visiting Assistant Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister Hu Zhengue, who arrived Kathmandu on Thursday night on his two-day visit to Nepal as a special envoy of the government of China, put forth the proposal during the bilateral talks held in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thursday. He also handed over the draft of the proposed treaty to Suresh Prasad Pradhan, the acting secretary at ministry, the daily said.

"The Chinese side has also proposed to sign the agreement during Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal´s proposed visit to China," said an official. Dahal is scheduled to visit the northern neighbor somewhere in the last week of April.

The Chinese proposal to sign a peace and friendship treaty between the two countries has come at a time when Nepal and India have publicly spoken about revising the 1950 Nepal-India Peace and Friendship Treaty.
