KATHMANDU, May 17: The government has frozen the accounts and property of Unity Life International (ULI), an operator of illicit network marketing business, and also imposed travel restrictions to its promoters, banning them from leaving the country, Monday.
Police also arrested Bhim Gurung, the financial director and one of the promoters of Unity Life International (ULI) that was operating illicit network marketing business from Jawalakhel, Lalitpur on Monday afternoon.[break]
“We are also searching for Kashi Ram (Prasad) Gurung, chairman and Bishnu bahadur Chhetri, managing director of Unity,” Ratna Raj Pandey, Chief District Officer of Lalitpur told myrepublica.com.
Issuing separate instructions to the Department of Immigration, the Ministry of Finance on the day also asked it not to allow promoters of the dubious network marketing company to leave the country.
“We have also asked the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) and Department of Cooperatives to freeze the deposits of Unity in the banks and financial institutions and also in Fina World and other possible cooperatives where it has savings accounts,” said a source.
MoF also issued circulars to the Department of Land Reforms and Management and Department of Transportation to restrict ownership transfer and transactions of its fixed property like land, housing, hospital and hotels, and also mobile assets like vehicles and others.
The Metropolitan Police Range, Lalitpur, had arrested Gurung from his office at Unity Tower, said Superintendent of Police (SP) Bikram Thapa.
Following the incident, hundreds of clients of Unity (who are termed as its members) have thronged the office demanding refund of their deposits and fees after learning that ULI is operating illegally.
They tried to vandalize the office by hurling stones. However, police have presently taken the situation under control. On Sunday, the Home Ministry had ordered chiefs of the District Administration Office of all 75 districts to investigate the ULI businesses and arrest promoters.
