KATHMANDU, March 16: The first edition of ECAN Higher Education and Career Fair has been announced. The event for students and parents on higher education and further career is being promoted by Republica and organized jointly by Education Consultancy Association of Nepal (ECAN) and Direction Nepal.

The four-day fair is slated to be organized from June 10-13, at Bhrikuti Mandap, Kathmandu.[break] The fair has not limited itself to the capital but has reached Pokhara and Narayanghat. The event at Pokhara is scheduled from June 4-6 and in Narayanghat from 17-19.

According to the organizers, this fair will provide a favorable atmosphere for educational and training institutions with different pavilions including the IT, polytechnics, computer schools, abroad study consultancies, and training institutions.

Rajendra Baral, General Secretary of ECAN, said that the event would not only help students get an admission in foreign universities but also give them knowledge about the procedures and requirements to go abroad.

He also added that like Cyprus, Australia and the UK, Nepal has the potential of selling education and generating income. "We first have to improve the education standard of our country and then we can expect foreign students," he said. There are quite a few numbers of medical students from India and other south Asian countries in Nepali medical colleges already.

ECAN also unveiled plans to designate ´Tourist Ambassadors´ for the country. The concept is that a student who is leaving to acquire a degree in a foreign country "will be given the title and also the responsibility of making known his country Nepal so as to increase tourism".

The career fair will have participation of national universities, colleges, educational clubs and associations, recruitment agencies, educational loan provider, abroad study consultancies, training institutes, psychological counseling and also libraries. The fair this year has been designed differently. Along with foreign universities it will also have Nepali universities and colleges. "We are expecting immense participation of local colleges too," informed Baral.

There will also be activities such as ´general sales activities branding opportunity liaisoning´ ´trade tie ups´ ´affiliations media feed generation endorsement´ ´lobbying seminars´ and ´presentations performances by participants´.

The event, which will see seminars and talks by various experts on higher education and career prospects, will take place from 11am to 5pm every day during the event at all three locations.

Direction Nepal is a Kathmandu-based event management company and ECAN is an umbrella organization of all the education consultancies in Nepal. Earlier, ECAN and Direction Nepal used to host two separate annual events for students. The organizers said they decided to merge the two education career fairs to have maximum impact possible. Direction Nepal this year has jointly collaborated with ECAN "to bring all the national and international educational institutions together for more effective, productive and close interaction to share their knowledge, experience and formulate result-oriented strategies," their joint press statement said.
