KATHMANDU, June 24: Seventeen small parties in the Constituent Assembly (CA) have decided to hold a meeting of top leaders of the big three parties -- UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress and CPN-UML -- on Tuesday.

A three-day meeting of the three parties that ended on Thursday decided to call the meeting after concluding that the big parties had neglected the task of drafting the new constitution. The small parties have demanded that the big three parties end the current political deadlock by implementing the three-point deal reached on May 28. [break]

Co-Chairman of Rastriya Janashakti Party Dr Prakash Chandra Lohani said the small parties will press the big three parties to fulfill their prime responsibility of promulgating the new constitution.

Lohani said the small parties will have no option but to go to the people if the big three refuse to mend their ways. “The meeting has decided to establish small parties as the fourth largest political force in the country,” he added.

Leaders from various parties, including Madhesi People´s Rights Forum-Democratic, Tarai Madhes Democratic Party, Sadbhawana Party, Nepal Family Party, Dalit Janajati Party, Socialistic Democratic People´s Party, CPN (Samyukta), Chure Bhavar Ekata Samaj and Rastriya Janashakti Party attended the meeting. Two independent CA members -- Baban Singh and Sadrul Miya Haq --were also present in the meeting.

Lohani said the meeting also dwelled on the performance of the current government. “The meeting concluded that the government had failed to deliver,” he said. “It has failed in various fronts including in curbing sky-rocketing market prices and capital flights, and improving law and order situation.”

The small parties have urged the big three parties to forge common understanding on the three-point deal and ensure its early implementation. “Resignation of the prime minister and implementation of the agreements on peace process should go simultaneously,” he added.
