Campus land encroached

DANG, April 4: Local people claiming themselves as freed Kamaiyas and landless squatters have encroached upon over 35 bighas of land owned by Mahendra Multiple Campus (MMC), Dang.

Local people, backed up by Freed Kamaiyas Struggle Committee (FKSC), have erected over 1,000 huts in 35 bighas of MMC land in Sonapur VDC of Dang over the last two years.

They had started erecting huts in MMC land since the elections to the Constituent Assembly (CA).

Earlier, local people had encroached upon 10 bighas of MMC land in Satbariya VDC of Dang.

"Who to blame at a time of political instability?" says Rajendra Shreshtha, principal of MMC.

With local people grabbing MMC lands, the college has lost one of its income sources. The college had been earning some Rs 500,000 per year before the locals grabbed the land.

The loss of income sources has affected Poor Students Trust (PST) funded by income mainly generated by the land. "We are somehow managing PST with some other resources," Shrestha said.
