Over 600 houses inundated in Biratnagar, public life disrupted

BIRATNAGAR, June 26: Biratnagar has been inundated due to the continuous rain. It has been raining in Biratnagar since Tuesday morning.

Rain water has overflowed from the road due to the blockage of drainage along the embankment of the Dharan-Biratnagar road section. The Nepal Oil Corporation building is inundated. Similarly, over 600 houses are also inundated in the Rani area of Biratnagar.

According to the District Police Office, many places of Morang district have been inundated due to the incessant rain. Nabraj Karki, superintendent of police (SP) at the District Police Office said that due to the incessant rain, the details have not yet been received and the information is arriving gradually.

According to Karki, some settlements of Biratnagar are inundated. SP Karki said that 10 families of Sardar Tole, Biratnagar Metropolitan City-19, have been displaced.

Similarly, the floodwater from the Kesalia River has entered the settlements in Biratnagar Municipality-12. According to Hira Lal Kamat, Ward Chairperson, over 60 houses in the riverbanks have been inundated.

As a result of the incessant rain lack of an efficient drainage system, roads and houses are waterlogged. About 100 families have been displaced in wards 12 and 19. Arjun Thapaliya, coordinator of the quick response team of Biratnagar Metropolitan City, said that those displaced families have taken shelter at a local school.

Currently, efforts are ongoing to open the drainage systems in various places. As much as 361 mm of rain has fallen in Biratnagar in the 24 hours from 8:45 AM on Tuesday to 8:45 AM on Wednesday.

According to Rajesh Jhaka, weather assistant at the field office of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology at the Biratnagar based airport, this year’s monsoon has brought the highest rainfall to Biratnagar.
