KATHMANDU, January 20: Bipin Joshi’s family in Kanchanpur anxiously awaits his safe return following the Hamas-Israel ceasefire. Hamas has held Bipin captive for 15 months.
The ceasefire has renewed hope in the family. Although the first phase of released hostages did not include Bipin’s name, the family remains optimistic about his release in the next phase.
Bipin's mother, Padma, expressed her distress through these words, "We hoped he would be released in the first phase, but it didn’t happen. My innocent son has been held captive for 15 months." She added that the family remains optimistic, despite similar disappointments in previous ceasefires.

"There’s always fear that war will resume, even after a ceasefire," Padma said. "But I request the government to ensure my son’s safe release during this ceasefire."
Bipin was one of 49 students from the Faculty of Agriculture at Sudurpaschim University who traveled to Israel under the “Learn and Earn” program. Within a month, Hamas attacked the Kibbutz Alumim in southern Israel, killing 10 students and taking Bipin hostage. His status has remained unknown since then.
The Israeli government released a list of 33 hostages to be freed in the first phase of the ceasefire, which did not include Bipin’s name.
Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak assured that the government is committed to securing Bipin’s release. “Our information confirms that Bipin is safe in Hamas custody. We are actively working for his release,” Minister Lekhak said. “With the current ceasefire in place, we are hopeful for his safe return.” He emphasized that the government is engaging in diplomatic efforts to secure Bipin’s freedom.
