14 rhinos died in the first seven months of current FY in Chitwan

CHITWAN, Feb 22: Fourteen rhinoceros have died in Chitwan National Park (CNP) and forest area till February 9 of the current fiscal year 2022/23. While 12 rhinos died in the park area, two others were found dead in the forest area.

According to Ganesh Prasad Tiwari, information officer of the CNP, three rhinos were killed by poachers in the current fiscal year. Out of which two rhinos were killed in the park area and one in the forest area. 

Of the two rhinos killed by poachers in the park, one had its horn taken away and one was a baby. 

According to the census conducted in 2021, there are 752 rhinos in Nepal. There are only 694 rhinos in CNP. After the poachers started killing rhinos, the Parks Department formed a study team led by the Deputy Director General of the Department. Along with this, the park administration is also strengthening its security strategy.

Last year, 41 rhinos died in CNP and forest areas. Tiwari said that 37 rhinos died in the park area and four in the forest area. Last year, two rhinos were killed by poachers.
